An Introduction to Irish Traditional Music 24 Jan 2013

Cormac De Barra (harp) and Eamonn De Barra (flute) lead a practical workshop designed to open up the world of traditional Irish music to teachers.

In an inviting atmosphere suitable for all levels, including complete beginners, the De Barra brothers will demystify Irish traditional music, helping participants to build the skills and confidence to engage with traditional music and bring it into the classroom. There will be a special feature on the fascinating history of the Irish harp, information relating to specific terminology as Gaeilge used in the performance of Irish traditional music, and lots of opportunities to participate through whistles, rhythms and Irish song. If you happen to play an instrument please feel free to bring it along.

About Cormac De Barra

Cormac De Barra is the third generation of harper in his family, first studying with his grandmother, Róisín Ní Shé. Cormac has recorded and performed with many groups and musicians including Clannad, Dervish, Brian Kennedy, Máire Breatnach and his brothers Éamonn and Fionán in the family group Barcó. He has also hosted TG4's flagship weekly arts show Imeall.

About Éamonn De Barra

Éamonn De Barra is a highly respected traditional flute player and a member of the critically acclaimed traditional band Slide who tour worldwide and have received a number of awards for their work. He is also a member of the renowned Damien Dempsey band. Éamonn teaches regularly at several Gaelscoileanna in Dublin and is a tutor in the Dundalk Institute of Technology Music Faculty.
