Be a Bee Hero! Inside the Junior Pollinator Plan… 6 Feb 2016

To stop bees disappearing from Ireland we need your help. We need you to tell everyone how important bees are and make your school and garden a safe place for bees to live. For Ages 6+. Part of Bee Day!

This session Dr. Niamh Shaw and her Dad will introduce you to the content of the Junior Pollinator Plan, why it’s so important and some of the things that you can do to be a Bee Hero.

In 2015 bee experts in Ireland came together to produce the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. This plan was created because it is becoming clear that lots of our bees are in trouble and could disappear from Ireland if we don’t do something to help. Without bees we won’t be able to grow our own fruits and vegetables, and our wild flowers will begin to disappear making Ireland a very dull place. We don’t want this to happen. We want to hear the buzz of hard working bees carrying out their important pollination work. We want them to be there so that we can grow healthy food to feed you, and so that you can grow healthy food to feed your children someday.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre, WillFredd Theatre and The Ark have teamed up to create a junior version of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020 . This plan will help children understand the importance of bees to our world and empower them to take action to help support our pollinators.

Dr. Niamh Shaw is a scientist and performer and passionate about igniting peoples natural curiosity and creativity. She will chat with her Dad, Tom Shaw, retired engineer, master beekeeper and Secretary of the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Association about how he got started in beekeeping, sharing stories about his bee hives and what we can all do in our gardens to help our native Bees do their important job.
