Crafted Creatures: Schools 2011 14 Feb - 9 Apr 2011
The Ark is preparing for an invasion of Crafted Creatures this spring, when each floor of our award-winning building will come to life with an animal-themed exhibition of Irish craft, specially commissioned by The Ark and Crafts Council of Ireland to celebrate Year of Craft 2011. Running in tandem with the exhibition, our schools craft workshops invite children to unleash their imagination and give potential to explore aspects of the primary school visual arts curriculum.
FREE EXHIBITION
On entering The Ark, your class will come face-to-face with a magical world of crafted soft toys, domestic and wild animals, insects, underwater creatures and mythical beasts. During the exhibition tour, children will discover some of the stories behind pieces on display, and will begin to understand the craft processes used to transform raw materials into something captivating. Please note that the exhibition is not open to public during the week.
SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS
Following the exhibition tour, your class will enter our bright and airy workshop space to become a craftsperson for a morning. Depending on which day you choose to attend, the children in your class will work with two professional craftspeople to create creatures from materials like clay, willow, paper, fibre, felt and rubber. All craft workshops start with a 20-minute guided exhibition tour.
Tickets: €6.50/€4.50*

Workshop Curricular Links
Children attending the workshops will explore a number of strands from the primary school visual arts, curriculum: including clay and construction, fabric and fibre, and drawing. Key concepts identified in the curriculum, such as awareness of form and shape, and opportunities for looking and responding will be central to activities at the Ark. Both the craftwork on display and the animal theme of the exhibition offer lots of ideas for supporting integration across the visual arts and the social, environmental and scientific education curricula.
