Ark Access for Schools
Teachers are provided with CPD (Continuing Professional Development) opportunities and online interactive classroom packs to increase engagement with The Ark as well as facilitating the teacher’s own development and ability to deliver arts-centered curricular activities in the classroom. Students will be provided with journals to reflect on their experience.
Why is Ark Access important? What is the need?
Early exposure to the arts has numerous benefits for children: greater self-esteem, confidence, socialisation, analytical skills, problem solving, concentration, collaboration, presentation skills, critical thinking and public speaking. Pupils from DEIS schools are more likely to have a high level of absenteeism, below average abilities in literacy and numeracy, poor retention in second level education and poor grades due to student disengagement. Ark Access for Schools will address this by adding a positive and uplifting element to these children’s lives and bridge the gap between those who have regular access to the arts and those who don’t.
Who will benefit from it?
We have chosen to focus on inner-city schools as these children are receiving their primary education in our local community and we want to invest in their future and ensure that they have the same access to culture as every other child in Ireland.
Where will the programme go in the future? What’s the vision? What are the goals?
The Ark will make Ark Access part of its core function and sustain it as a permanent aspect of school and community engagement. We hope to fill the anticipated demand from schools by increasing the number of schools we engage with so that every school in our local community can visit us for free. We also hope to inspire other arts organisations to introduce similar schemes.
