With the advent of new technologies in media, images are a dominant feature of our everyday lives. If children are to take full advantage of the opportunities afforded to them by visual media, it is vitally important they are taught to read, comprehend, and criticize the visual images that surround them.
This workshop for teachers with will consist of a 30-minute lecture focussing on the language of visual literacy, followed by a 50-minute interactive workshop exploring how visual literacy can be taught in the classroom using picture books. Jennifer O’Sullivan lectures in education at Marino Institute of Education and has produced NCCA guidelines on visual literacy for teachers.

About Jennifer O'Sullivan
Jennifer O’Sullivan lectures in education at Marino Institute of Education, Dublin. Before joining the staff at MIE, she was a primary school teacher. She has conducted research in the area of visual literacy and has been commissioned by the NCCA to produce guidelines for teachers in this area. She has a particular interest in picturebooks, both from a literary and a pedagogical perspective, and has served on the judging panel of the Children’s Books Ireland Book of the Year awards for the past three years. She is also a regular reviewer for Inis, the Children’s Books Ireland Magazine.
