Ark Access for Schools

We have expanded our Ark Access programme! Ark Access provides twenty DEIS schools, local to The Ark, with free access to four of The Ark’s multidisciplinary events over one school year.

Ark Access provides opportunities for professional artists to work closely with the participating schools. Teachers are provided with CPD (Continuing Professional Development) opportunities and online interactive classroom packs to increase engagement with The Ark as well as facilitating the teacher’s own development and ability to deliver arts-centered curricular activities in the classroom.

Why is Ark Access important?
Early exposure to the arts has numerous benefits for children: greater self-esteem, confidence, socialisation, analytical skills, problem solving, concentration, collaboration, presentation skills, critical thinking and public speaking. Pupils from DEIS schools are more likely to have a high level of absenteeism, below average abilities in literacy and numeracy, poor retention in second level education and poor grades due to student disengagement. Ark Access for Schools adds a positive and uplifting element to these children’s lives and bridges the gap between those who have regular access to the arts and those who don’t.

Ark Access is committed to providing the following benefits to all participating schools including your local DEIS school:

  • Four class activities delivered by The Ark each year, such as hands-on workshops and access to performances and exhibitions.
  • Teacher’s CPD training to enhance their ability to bring creativity into the classroom, in line with the curriculum .
  • Classroom activity packs to extend the experience into the classroom with activities closely tied to the curriculum .
  • Regular communication and support year-round through school liaisons.
  • The Access for Schools Programme helps us to create and maintain relationships with our neighbourhood DEIS schools, providing a foundation for other projects and opportunities, such as The Ark Children's Council, our award-winning film The First Was a Boy and more.
