Animation Screening: The Secret of Kells 11 Jan 2014

A bewitching animated fairytale for Children and adults alike, this is the perfect opportunity to see the Academy Award nominated animation The Secret of Kells.

Nominated for an Academy Award in 2010 (Best Animated Feature), this vibrant animation is a spirited retelling of the origin of Ireland’s most cherished artefact, the Book of Kells. With the Viking hordes approaching, the monks of Kells are forced to turn their attention from transcribing manuscripts to building barricades. The future of the precious book is in jeopardy and it falls to Brendan, young nephew of the abbot Cellach, to save the day.

Featuring the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Evan McGuire, Christen Mooney and Mick Lally and music by Bruno Coulais and Kíla.

With beautiful and intricate hand-drawn animation, it tells the story of young monk Brendan who is learning how to illuminate manuscripts. His uncle, the Abbot Kellach, has forbidden him to go outside the monastery walls for fear of Vikings.

One day Brother Aidan shows up with a book he is trying to complete. When Brendan goes into the forest to get berries for ink, he meets Aisling a spirit girl. She leads him into the heart of the woodland where he gets inspiration to complete the Book of Kells.
