Amazing Animals: Workshops for Schools 9 Nov 2020
Writer Sarah Webb and illustrator Alan Nolan, present online workshops for schools based on their book Animal Crackers: Fantastic Facts about your Favourite Animals.
Focusing on animals who can survive in extreme environments and other interesting scientific facts about animals, the workshops explore through writing and drawing what we can learn from them for our future survival on Earth. Animal Crackers workshop will be full of fun facts and engaging activities – from how to draw your favourite animals to suggestions on how you can help save the planet! Join in for an interactive mash-up of crazy animal facts, drawing and book fun.
Alan Nolan has written and illustrated many brilliant books for children including Fintan’s Fifteen and Conor’s Caveman, while Sarah Webb’s books for young readers include The Songbird Café Girls series and Emma the Penguin.
Curricular Links
These online workshop will explore and link to aspects of the Science, English and Visual Arts curricula. Children will develop the ability to apply STEM learning in creative ways in particular through linkage with the drawing and design strands of the Visual Arts curriculum. The creative writing elements link to English curriculum strands such as receptiveness to language; competence and confidence in using language; emotional and imaginative development through language.
Requirements for Participation
For safety reasons, a teacher must be present in the room throughout the workshop and be available to assist the children as needed.
- A computer/laptop with internet access
- A digital whiteboard (or alternatively a white wall and projector).

- Each child will also need pencils and paper
- To ensure a smooth and successful workshop, The Ark staff and the artist will also need to arrange an advance preparation phone call with the class teacher.
Online platform: The workshop will be delivered using the Zoom video call software.This will be a private Zoom session which will only be accessed by the teacher whose class is booked into the workshop, the artist and The Ark's staff. The session will be recorded for the safety and security of all participants, however this recording will not be shared publicly and will be deleted within 30 days.
