Discover Craft Schools Workshop: Birdie in the Window 1 - 4 Mar 2022

Discover the magic of felt making with artist Niki Collier as she leads you through the technique of making a stained-glass effect with felt.

The workshop will focus on teaching you the skills and techniques of the ancient craft of felt making. Transform simple wool fibres into colour fabric and artworks without the need for needle and thread. Niki will guide you through the fun process of creating a stained-glass effect with wool in which you’ll place your own colourful felted bird.

Niki is creating an online exhibition of felted stained glass with Feltmakers Ireland funded by Design and Crafts Council Ireland. If you wish to have your class’s work included in the exhibition, please send any artwork images to The Ark at boxoffice@ark.ie to share with Niki.

Things you will need to take part

  • As this is a felting workshop, where warm soapy water is used to blend fibres together, things can get a little messy! So it is recommended that all desks are completely clear.
  • Access to lukewarm water is needed. You will need to rinse off your felted creation and bottles and containers will need to be filled with water, so access to a sink is preferred but a bucket of water will also work.
  • Materials will be provided but as water is being used, towels/paper towels would be helpful to clean up any spills!
  • Set up will take 5/10 minutes.
  • Clean-up will take approx. 10 minutes.

Curriculum Links

This is a hands-on tactile workshop which focuses on a number of elements within the fabric and fibre strand of the curriculum. Exploring the textures and open weave of felt children will experiment with line, shape, colour to design their own piece of art.
