Discover Craft Schools Workshop: Scrappy Little Monsters 1 - 4 Mar 2022

Transform some old materials scraps or an orphan sock to a magnificent monster through the art of felt making!

In this workshop you’ll try the oldest textile making craft- wet felting. This is the process of creating art through a chaos of wool fibres combining together through the simple act rubbing with warm soapy water.

During this workshop with artist Niki Collier, starting with your scrap material you’ll make a little monster of your own by wrapping it up in colourful felted fibres and yarn. You’ll give your extraordinary creation a monster make-over using googly eyes, buttons and mixed materials making it the wild and original scrappy little monster.

Things you will need to take part

  • As this is a felting workshop, where warm soapy water is used to blend fibres together, things can get a little messy! So it is recommended that all desks are completely clear.
  • Access to lukewarm water is needed. Bottles and containers will need to be filled with water, so access to a sink is preferred but a bucket of water will also work.
  • Materials will be provided but as water is being used, towels/paper towels would be helpful to clean up any spills!
  • Set up will take 5/10 minutes.
  • Clean-up will take approx. 10 minutes.

Curriculum Links

This is a hands-on tactile workshop which focuses on a number of elements within the fabric and fibre strand of the curriculum. It will give children the opportunity to explore textile as a media for imaginative expression while discovering different textures and how they can be manipulated and used together to create artwork.
