Fun Size Jazz! 7 May 2018

Give jazz a try at The Ark as accomplished musicians share short performances of new ideas for young audiences in our new Fun-Size Jazz series. In partnership with Improvised Music Company.

Each performance will showcase a range of different musicians, bands and ensembles as they try out early versions of their ideas for what they hope will be exciting jazz and improvised based music for children. Each show will have a relaxed atmosphere and will be hosted by our MC Sam Kavanagh who will encourage the musicians and the audience to have fun together and to chat about what you liked (or didn’t!) about the music so that the musicians can learn and improve their ideas.

In May's show we have three great acts for you:

  • With the Flow - Expect some great music from this band exploring the elements of water, wind and Latin swing!
With Filipa Quintino (voice and twirl pipe), Tommy Moore (electric bass and voice), John Moriarty (guitar and doublebass), Shane O'Donovan (drums
  • String Play - This inventive string duo will take you on a playful non-verbal journey using improvised music to express everyday experiences such as sleeping, waking, dreaming, conversations, arguments, friendship and travelling.
With Kathrine Barnecutt (violin, viola) and Mary Barnecutt (cello, double bass, loop pedal).
  • Family Sound Recipes - A family of musicians improvise and create fantastic music together on the spot using the sound ingredients provided by all their various instruments, as well as some live art making as a part of the performance.
Michael Nielsen (guitar), Marta Nielsen (accordion), Oskar Nielsen (drums) & Harriet Nielsen (tin whistle/painting).

This is a great chance for music lovers of all ages to try something new together.

We are delighted to present this event as part of Bealtaine @ Temple Bar, organised in partnership with Age & Opportunity as part of the nationwide Bealtaine festival – celebrating the arts and creativity as we age.
