make | shape for Schools 14 - 17 Oct 2014

Introduce your class to ceramics and 3D construction by visiting this interactive and engaging exhibition that reveals a range of important skills for creating with clay.

Celebrating the work of eight ceramic artists who have worked on the DCCoI’s primary schools CRAFTed programme, it explores how collaborative projects with children have influenced their approach to making.

Potter Christien van Bussel will guide your class through the exhibition and will then lead a ceramic workshop session. This session is aligned to the clay and construction strands of the visual arts curriculum.

Making Shapes Workshop
Flatten, roll, cut, construct, score, slip and coil. Find out what these words mean and how to use these skills to create with clay. It's all about shape for Christien. She will share techniques in constructing with clay and guide the students as they make a piece of pottery that is truly individual. Hear what inspires Christien’s pottery and discover that inspiration can be found in everyday objects both at home and in school. This workshop is a great opportunity for teachers and students to learn clay skills and techniques from a professional craftsperson that can easily be brought back to the classroom.

About CRAFTed

CRAFTed connects creativity and innovation at an early stage of children’s development, giving children and teachers opportunities to explore their creativity and learn new skills by working with professional craftspeople. The programme is designed to build skills, develop competencies and provide resources that support creative learning for teachers, their students and craftspeople.

CRAFTed supports the delivery of the Visual Arts curriculum and investigates how craft processes can contribute to learning in other subject areas such as the SESE curriculum.
