Written and directed by Ark Artist in Residence Shaun Dunne as part of The Ark's Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire Neighbourhood Project in 2019, Iarscoláire will make its official premiere at Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival 2020.
As part of our ongoing engagement with our neighbouring schools, in 2019 The Ark engaged Shaun Dunne, documentary theatre-artist, film-maker and Ark Artist in Residence to work with inner-city primary school Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire to develop a participative short film.
Filmed on location at the Old Coláiste Mhuire Building on Parnell Square North in May 2019, the project brought both present and past pupils of Coláiste Mhuire together to explore the history of the school and issues around the old school building's abandoned and dilapidated state.
This was an intergenerational project, involving both present and past pupils of the Gaelscoil. As well as working with students from the national primary school in the inner city and students from Coláiste Mhurie secondary school in Cabra, Dublin 7, we also did a public call out for older and younger alumni, thereby involving past pupils who had attended Coláiste Mhuire in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
It was also a bilingual project, with workshops conducted through both Irish and English. Our Engagement Coordinator, Liam McCarthy, and Shaun met with pupils from the school as well as older alumni, and delivered workshops between October of 2018 and May of 2019. Some staff of Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire, Ark staff and staff of Dublin City Council and the Parnell Square library project were also involved. Shaun then used contributions from these workshops to write the script for Iarscoláire, which he also directed.
Filmed and edited by Luca Truffarelli, Iarscoláire will makes its official premiere as part of the VMDIFF Shorts #5 Selection at the Light House Cinema at 6pm on Friday 6 March 2020. Tickets are available to purchase here.
