The Ark is proud to have been nominated for both the Judges' Special Award and for the Audience Choice Prize for The Haircut! at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards 2019.
2019 has been an outstanding year here at The Ark, particularly in relation to new writing for children, with two new Ark commissions (Peat by Kate Heffernan, The Haircut! by Wayne Jordan & Tom Lane) making it onto our stage as well as an interactive, multi-disciplinary co-production with ANU (Scrapefoot). The Ark is proud and delighted to see this contribution to Ireland's theatrical landscape recognised with a nomination in the category of Judges' Special Award at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards, "For engaging with a wide range of theatremakers, challenging them to create sophisticated work for young audiences, sometimes for the first time."
At the same time, we were thrilled to see Tom Lane nominated for Best Soundscape for his stellar work on The Haircut!, which combined a beautiful musical score using cello, clarinet and percussion with a range of evocative foley-style sound effects to bring the story of King Labhraidh Loingseach to life.
Finally, we are thrilled that The Haircut! has also been nominated for the Audience Choice Prize. We had incredible responses to the show from children and grown-ups alike, and it is wonderful to see this reflected in this nomination.
Over the past number of years, The Ark has been striving to create work for children at the highest possible standard, and to ensure that it is on a par with work produced for grown-ups. It is wonderful to see this acknowledged in these nominations for 2019, and we hope that this recognition of children's theatre as equal to theatre for grown-ups will continue into the future. If you'd like to help us achieve this goal, please consider giving The Haircut! your vote for the Audience Choice Prize at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards.
